TRANSITIONS is for first-year, Interim (January) or spring semester transfer students. Interim students orientation begins on Wednesday, January 2, 2019. Orientation for Spring students begins on Thursday, January 24, 2019. Activities and creative workshops will highlight the range of opportunities Calvin.

Dates & Schedule

    For Interim students, TRANSITIONS starts on Wednesday, January 2 and will meet for lunch each Thursday in January. These lunches include meeting an advisor to confirm your class schedule, learning about opportunities at Calvin, as well as, hearing from current faculty members and finally a Grand Rapids outing.

  • Part I is on Tuesday, January 2 from 4:30–7 p.m. - several sessions and a broad focus and will have parts for family members.
  • Part II will be a lunch on Thursday, January 3 from 12 p.m.–1:30 p.m. - review of academic pieces and advising.
  • Part III will be a lunch on Thursday, January 10 from 12–1:30 p.m. - ways to get connected and involved on campus.
  • Part IV will be lunch on Thursday, January 17 - hear ways to be successful in the classroom.

For spring students, TRANSITIONS is a two-day orientation program starting January 24 at 1:30 p.m. and goes through January 25. This includes meeting an advisor to confirm your class schedule, learning about opportunities at Calvin, as well as a Grand Rapids outing.

Moving-in

If you are planning to live in the residence halls or Knollcrest East apartments, Interim students may move in January 2 between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Spring students may move in January 24, between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Stop by the Campus Involvement and Leadership office as part of the housing check-in process.

Orientation Costs

There is a charge for attending TRANSITIONS. The student registration fee is $150. Up to two adult family members may attend parent programming for free. The orientation fee will be added to your student account by the Financial Services Office in February.

  • What to expect

    Calvin's orientation programs have three objectives:

    • To introduce you to Calvin's purpose, people, and programs
    • To help ensure your smooth transition to college
    • To prepare you academically for your years at Calvin

    You will be covering following information:

    • Reformed, Liberal Arts College—what it means that Calvin is Reformed and Liberal Arts.
    • Agents of Renewal—what it means that God is renewing all things.
    • Doing God’s Work in God’s World—what God is calling us to as we learn and as we serve.

    • Meet with an advisor and confirm your classes
    • Get your student ID
    • Register your vehicle

  • Before you arrive

    Steps that you need to complete before you arrive:

    1. Register yourself and your family members.
    2. Pay your enrollment deposit.
    3. Be sure you have received a confirmation email in your Calvin email account from the Campus Involvement and Leadership Office.
    4. Print out driving directions and a campus map

    Upon arrival, follow the road signs to the Covenant Fine Arts Center parking lot. Make your way to the Commons Annex Building where you'll:

    • Check-in.
    • Obtain a resource packet.
    • Receive a personalized schedule.
